Matthew Broderick. James Earl Jones. Jeremy Irons. Nathan Lane. Whoopi freaking Goldberg. It’s a voice-cast smorgasbord! But there’s more than just the spectacular cast. Add some of the finest hand-drawn animation Disney’s ever produced and (what I think is) the best Hans Zimmer soundtrack this side of Rain Man and you can’t go wrong. I even loved all the sly nods to real life. (It’s a Small World, I’m looking at you.) I was also stunned by the rapidly changing tone of the movie, quickly switching from funny to scary to sad to many other moods. I grew up on this and other Disney classics, so I’m obviously going to be biased. But if you don’t like this movie, you and I have nothing more to discuss.
